LSU AAUP Report on Meeting with Chancellor Candidate Michael Martin.
On May 20, 2008, the Executive Committee of
the LSU Chapter of the AAUP,
together with the LSU Faculty Senate Executive Committee (FSEC),
held a meeting with Dr. Michael Martin,
who, as of May 20, was the only candidate being
considered for the job of LSU Chancellor
(for the latest, see www.lsu.edu/chancellor/search).
Click here for our chapter's report of the May 20 meeting;
the FSEC has written its own, separate report on the meeting,
which will soon be available at http://www.lsu.edu/senate.
Our AAUP report makes no recommendation;
it just reports what Martin said during our meeting.

May 12, 2008 update on House Bill 179 "Sick/Alternative Leave Bill" (see previous announcement):
On May 1, the LSU Faculty Senate unanimously adopted Resolution 08-13, "Opposition to HB 179, the Sick/Alternative Leave Bill"
(see www.lsu.edu/senate), which was inspired by, and almost verbatim the same as, the "Statement from the AAUP Forum" of April 29, just below. A few days later, the LSU System Council of Faculty Advisors (the assembly of all LSU System Faculty Senate presidents, chairs, or
leaders) gave corroborating support to Resolution 08-13. LSU Faculty Senate President Kevin Cope then forwarded Resolution
08-13 to the 17 members of the Louisiana House Education Committee, and to LSU Interim Chancellor William Jenkins and LSU System President John Lombardi.
On May 12 the LSU administration announced that it had, as requested, withdrawn its support of HB 179, and that State Representative Stephen Carter would, as requested, not introduce HB 179. The administration also asked the Faculty Senate Executive Committee to recommend names of faculty members to assist them with drafting a revised bill for a future legislative session.

Statement from the AAUP Forum on HB 179, the "Sick/Alternative-Leave" Bill
This statement was forwarded on April 30 to the LSU Administration and to the 17 members of the Louisiana House Education Committee.
On April 29, 2008,
the LSU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors hosted a 90-minute forum (see below), attended by approximately 35 LSU faculty and staff, on the subject of Louisiana House Bill 179 ("Sick/Alternative Leave"), which was originally pre-filed in the Legislature on March 14, 2008, and which was followed by an informal newer version, incorporating several amendments proposed by the LSU administration, as posted April 28 at the website of the LSU Faculty Senate, www.lsu.edu/senate.
At the end of the forum, those in the audience voted unanimously as
follows:
(a) to state that we find both versions of this bill to be premature, and flawed in content and in the procedure that has led to them; and
(b) to go on record as being opposed to both versions of the bill.
Those in the audience also voted unanimously:
(1) to urge the LSU administration to withdraw its support from this bill;
(2) to urge the LSU administration in the future to follow the procedure of shared governance by formulating changes to sick and annual leave policy in consultation with faculty and staff before sending them to the Legislature; and
(3) to ask State Representative Stephen Carter to withdraw HB-179, in order to allow a more carefully reasoned bill to be formulated.

The LSU AAUP chapter conveys its heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families and friends of Mr. Chandrasekar Reddy Komar and Mr. Kiran Kumar Allam.
The lives of these two bright, young, promising doctoral students at LSU were brought to a tragic end by an act of violence in December 2007. The LSU Chapter of AAUP stands
in solidarity with the families and friends of the departed souls and shares their grief. The Chapter reaffirms its efforts in promoting an academic
environment on our campus that is conducive to learning, research, and scholarship.

The Chapter would like to thank Manjit Kang for his years of service to the AAUP, both nationally and locally, and we congratulate him
on
his appointment (2007) as Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University. We wish him the very best in his new adventure.

Advertisement (posted April 18, 2008):
I am a non-smoking female Visiting Assistant Professor in LSU's Foreign Languages & Literatures Department, looking for a furnished house or condo in a quiet location close to campus for the 2008-9 AY. I would ideally like to sign a lease for the time period of Mid-August 2008 to Mid-May 2009. I am looking for housing for myself only (I don't have children or pets), and would be glad to look after houseplants or pets if they aren't too high maintenance.
Please contact Charles Delzell (President of LSU Chapter of AAUP, cdelzell@cox.net, 578-1602) if interested.
